Back to basics for Eubank Jr
With this now established as the absolute truth, perhaps Chris Eubank Sr might do his son a favour and calm down a little bit.
In narrowly outpointing Eubank Jr in London on Saturday, Billy Joe Saunders dealt a blow for old-fashioned seasoning against premature bluster.
Saunders, like Leonard, was an Olympian. But Saunders, like Leonard, knew that a stellar amateur record counted for little once the vest came off.
An unbeaten professional record built of journeymen is like a castle built of sand. A pro should spend his early years constructing high walls, ramparts and moats, so that he feels secure when a dangerous foe is at the drawbridge.
During the build-up to Saturday's contest, Eubank Sr raved about the tricks his son was performing in the gym. Super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch said Eubank Jr had acquitted himself well in sparring. But championship boxing and the gym are as different as The Open and the putting green.
Chris Eubank Jr received advice from his father throughout Saturday's fight at the Excel
So it was no real surprise that Saunders prevailed. Before Saturday, his unbeaten record consisted of 20 fights and included five 12-rounders. Eubank Jr was unbeaten in 18 contests but had never been past eight rounds.
All this being said, Eubank Jr only just came up short. True, Saunders gave his less experienced rival a boxing lesson in the first half of the fight, making him look ungainly and amateurish. But Eubank Jr, like his old man used to do, came on like a train down the stretch.
Indeed, despite having his bombast pricked, Eubank Sr will have been mightily proud. The chip isn't the old block yet - but we shouldn't expect him to be.
Eubank's impromptu recital of 'If'At 25, Eubank Jr has the prime raw ingredients and the time to blend them into something potent. But he will learn far more from tough domestic opponents - the likes of Yorkshire's Nick Blackwell and London's John Ryder - than he will from any number of obscure eastern Europeans boasting spurious CVs.
And while Eubank Sr is right to dream, he is probably better off keeping those dreams to himself. The problem with telling your kid that he's as talented as Sugar Ray Leonard - one of the all-time greats - is that he might believe you. And it must be confusing when he finds out that the truth is somewhat different.
If he learns some humility, admits his limitations and is prepared to go back to the drawing board and build those high walls, ramparts and moats, Eubank Jr could become a world champion yet. And that's not a bad ambition.
As for Saunders, he should be applauded for taking a fight he didn't have to take. With a world title challenge on the horizon (he will fight the winner of Ireland's Andy Lee and Russia's Matt Korobov, who contest the vacant WBO middleweight title on 13 December) he could have taken a less risky option.
Instead, he gave the public what they crave - and what in previous eras would have been quite normal. Namely, an entertaining boxing match between two domestic rivals. One man won, one man lost; no dramas, everyone just carry on. Do it all again a couple of years later in a bigger venue, everyone's a winner.
Fury dominated the heavyweight title eliminator against Chisora, ending the contest after 10 rounds There is not much to say about the headline fight between Tyson Fury and Dereck Chisora, except that the latter gave it his all, the former jabbed his head off and Fury should fight Wladimir Klitschko for the world heavyweight title next autumn. Yep, boxing can be this simple.
Had the fight started when it was supposed to, I suspect there would have been far less booing. But when the main event is delayed by well over an hour, you've paid £100 for a ticket and you've missed your last train home, the only thing that is going to placate you is if you're served up the Thrilla in Manila.
As it was, when Chisora called it quits after 10 one-sided rounds it was past 1am and half the crowd had left. What other sport, or indeed branch of entertainment, would spend months promoting a show only for it to overrun so drastically that punters miss the headline act?
The mind drifts to Woodstock in 1969. But Woodstock was free. And those that hung around long enough got to hear Jimi Hendrix.
It is all very well boasting of having a 'stacked' card but unless it runs on time it causes problems for everyone. Not only were journalists unable to get the Fury-Chisora result in the Sunday newspapers, in some cases they couldn't even update their online editions because office sub-editors had also gone home.
Given Eddie Hearn's dreary pay-per-view fight between Tony Bellew and Nathan Cleverly last weekend, Saturday was a chance for Frank Warren to land a telling shot on his young promotional rival. Despite the best efforts of Eubank Jr and Saunders, Warren missed - and boxing fans took the hit instead.
Webber injured in Brazil race crash
The Australian, 38, who quit F1 last year after a 12-year career featuring nine grand prix wins, was racing for Porsche at the Six Hours of Sao Paulo.
Race organisers said there had been a collision between his car and the Ferrari of Italy's Matteo Cressoni.
A statement on Webber's website said he was having further medical checks.
Webber's former F1 teams include Williams and Red Bull, where he raced alongside four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.
British F1 driver Jenson Button tweeted: "Glad to see @AussieGrit is OK after his shunt at Interlagos @FIAWEC, that was a big one matey."

Gerrard started on the bench against Stoke at Anfield, 16 years after his debut as a sub against Blackburn
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has denied there is a rift between him and boss Brendan Rodgers after he was left out of the side that beat Stoke.
It was the first time the midfielder, 34, had not started a league game since New Year's Day, when he was injured.
Rodgers's decision to omit Gerrard from the 1-0 win at Anfield came on the 16th anniversary of his debut for the club.
'Rodgers managing Gerrard on way down' - LawrensonBut he said on Instagram: "Just to set the record straight, media talk of a fall-out between us two is nonsense."
Rodgers admitted he was unaware of the milestone in Gerrard's career when he left out the former England captain.
"I wasn't aware it was 16 years until I walked into the dressing room and saw the programme," Rodgers explained, after his side secured their first win in five games.
"I felt quite bad but he's a wonderful man. He thinks about the team."
Gerrard's contract expires at the end of this season and his performances have been criticised this this term.
The former England captain, who retired from international football after the World Cup, has made 18 appearances for Liverpool in 2014-15
He played 90 minutes against Ludogorets in the midweek Champions League draw and replaced Lucas in the 75th minute at Anfield.
Rodgers praises 'incredible' Reds"I look at each game and put the players in I think will get us a result," Rodgers said.
"He came on and gave a great contribution when his experience and his stature in the game helped us. He will always play a part in our work.
"Every player wants to play every minute of every game but the reality is that at this level, and how competitive it is and the squad we have got here, you can't just rely on Steven in every single game.
"He's been brilliant for me in my time here."
Former Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince told BBC Match of the Day: "You want to keep on playing so when you feel fit and you're not playing it kills you. Steven Gerrard wants to play every game, he doesn't want to sit on the bench."
Danny Murphy added: "I was with Paul at Liverpool when Steven made his debut and I can't believe it has been 16 years but he's got to accept that now. It might benefit him actually as we've seen with Frank Lampard."

England failed to adjust - Hughes
Anyone who went hard at the ball soon came unstuck. England realised that, but only after they were four wickets down.
Sri Lanka reached 100 having lost only two wickets, after which a delighted crowd were treated to a masterclass in how to manoeuvre the ball into a gap from those runmeisters Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
A required run-rate of 4.13 was never going to seriously tax Sri Lanka, who took an eight-wicket victory and a 2-0 lead in the seven-match series.
After last Wednesday's defeat in the first ODI, the England camp talked about the importance of cashing in on the first 10 overs of the innings when the new ball(s) slide pleasantly off the pitch, timing is easier and the field is in.
They played in this second match as if they were batting on the same pitch. In terms of the actual strip they were but after the tropical thunderstorms of the last two days and the hot sun that followed it behaved rather differently. It was like batting on drying Plasticine.
Since the Champions Trophy in 2013, England have lost 15 of their 22 completed ODIs against Test-playing opposition
Alastair Cook has lost seven of his last eight ODIs as captain
England's last ODI series win under Cook's captaincy was in New Zealand in February 2013 (having won in West Indies under Stuart Broad in Feb/Mar 2014)
Sri Lanka anticipated that and opened the bowling with spin from one end.
Moeen Ali, still in the assault mode that brought him a brilliant hundred on Wednesday, went up the pitch and tried to launch the off-spin of Tillakaratne Dilshan over the top. He succeeded only in miscuing onto his stumps.
Underlining the variety at his disposal, captain Angelo Mathews summoned the left arm spin of Rangana Herath when Ian Bell took guard. Bell tried once unconvincingly to loft Herath over the top - the ball was gripping and turning. He perished trying it again.
After one or two decent strokes, Alastair Cook swept at Dilshan who had switched ends, got a top edge and was caught in the deep. England were 37-3.
Ravi Bopara made his second successive England half-century, but only he and Joe Root passed 22
England's best batting came from Joe Root and Ravi Bopara, who played the ball as late as possible, scoring mainly with deft flicks and glides and dextrous use of the wrists. Bopara hit only one boundary in his fifty.
Once again he was let down because the lower order found the assortment of Sri Lankan spinners unfathomable. England's total of 185 was woefully inadequate.
England still opened with pace - sticking to what they know - and Steven Finn's first over disappeared for 12 to a predictably ambitious Dilshan.
As soon as spin was introduced, Dilshan was dismissed trying to clatter a straight six, but all this did was bring together Sangakkara and Jayawardene for an exhibition of how to dissect a bowling attack.
Both took their time initially before unveiling their distinct repertoires. Sangakkara was briefly troubled by Moeen's spin away, and generally less fluent, but used the opportunity to groove his batting rhythm.
With silky movements and flexible wrists, Jayawardene persuaded the ball into spaces, rarely hitting it in front of the wicket. Even his straight six - the only one of the match - was achieved purely through sumptuous timing.
26 - Sourav Ganguly & Sachin Tendulkar (India)
16 - Adam Gilchrist & Matthew Hayden (Australia)
15- Gordon Greenidge & Desmond Haynes (West Indies); Mahela Jayawardene & Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)
14 - Tillakaratne Dilshan & Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka); Marvan Atapattu & Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
Towards the end the pair looked as if they were having an extended net.
Added to their naivety with the bat, England have the added problem of spinners who all turn the ball the same way.
This is fine against a team of left-handers but they would undoubtedly benefit from a leg-spinner or a left-armer who could spin the ball away from right-handers as well. It's a minor detail.
Ultimately England would benefit from a win but how they are going to achieve that in this series is anyone's guess.

VIDEO: #PutOutYourBats tributes to Hughes
People all over Australia have been paying tribute to the cricketer Phillip Hughes by putting their cricket bats outside their homes.
Many of them posted a picture of their bats on social media under the hastag PutOutYourBats, and the idea has caught on around the world.
The 25-year-old died on Thursday - two days after being struck on the neck during a domestic match in Australia.
Fiona Bruce reports.
Fifa under scrutiny after new claims
Just when you might have assumed it could not get any worse, it does.
More intrigue. More suspicion. And more allegations.
The publication by the Culture, Media & Sport Select Committee of a submission given to it by the Sunday Times newspaper contains some eye-catching claims.
Not least, that the England 2018 bid and its associates "had commissioned high-level intelligence-gathering and surveillance on the other countries bidding to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups...the bid paid private companies and individual consultants to spy on its rivals in the run-up to the vote in December 2010".
Later, it is claimed the bid had "received assistance from Britain's official security services to set up surveillance countermeasures because they feared Russia was spying on them when they met with voters to ask them to back the England 2018 bid. The security officials had advised them to lock their phones in lead boxes during such meetings and swept the rooms to make sure they had not been bugged".
It reads like something out of a John le Carre novel.
Michael Garcia (left) questioned Hans-Joachim Eckert's report into his two-year inquiry into the World Cup bidding process So what does all this mean for Fifa? And for Russia and Qatar, whose bids feature prominently in the submission?
After all, a source connected to the England 2018 claims the following: "We did have intelligence that states paid bribes to Fifa members…The [England] bid was never going to win because of the corruption on the other side."
While these are new claims, the sense is that this is the continuation of a theme. Many observers believe that Fifa stopped functioning as a credible governing body a long time ago, and that the way the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were chosen was entirely flawed. This, for many, will merely reinforce that suspicion.
Both Russia and Qatar, who four years ago won the right to stage the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively, have always denied any wrongdoing, and their bids have recently been cleared by Fifa's ethics chief after a two-year investigation (albeit one that lost much credibility after a summary of its findings was disowned by the investigator himself) .
However, football's world governing body has still faced calls to re-run the voting contest.
Whether it is the stifling heat of the gulf state's summer, the treatment of migrant labourers or allegations of corruption in the bidding process, Qatar in particular has been under siege from critics who say it should never have been chosen to host the tournament in the first place.
World Cup bid: Greg Dyke wants Garcia report publicationFifa has become used to fighting off accusations about votes being sold in World Cup bidding races, members of its executive committee using office for personal gain, and collusion between bids.
So expect more of the same, especially when the Sunday Times itself admits: "While we have made efforts to corroborate the information...it has been impossible to verify many aspects of the intelligence which we are told the England 2018 team compiled independently."
The newspaper's information certainly makes for fascinating reading, but appears to fall a long way short of the clear proof or solid evidence that would force Fifa into a sensational revote.
Even though the Football Association admits that it did indeed engage with "media and corporate affairs consultants engaged on a confidential basis to gather intelligence", the Sunday Times' submission relies on claims, recollections and rumours from anonymous sources, about a secret database that it has not seen.
As one England 2018 source tells the newspaper: "A lot of it was just outlandish stuff you hear on the circuit..." The same source, according to the submission, "said that although the information was 'fascinating' it was just intelligence and, therefore, not enough to prove corruption conclusively on its own."
To be clear, the Sunday Times is only able to publish many of these fresh allegations because a parliamentary committee has posted them on its own website. So the newspaper and anyone else who repeats the claims are protected by parliamentary privilege.
It is reminiscent of 2011 when former FA chairman Lord Triesman used parliamentary privilege to allege that four senior Fifa officials had asked for inducements to vote for England.
2 December 2010 - Russia and Qatar are chosen to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cup.
4 October 2013 - Fifa agrees to set up a taskforce to look into alternative dates for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
1 June 2014 - The Sunday Times alleges that former Fifa vice-president, Mohamed bin Hammam, paid £3m to football officials in return for support for the Qatari bid
5 September 2014 - The report into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding process is submitted to Fifa by Michael Garcia
13 November 2014 - Fifa release a 42-page summary of the Garcia report which clears Russia and Qatar of corruption
13 November 2014 - Garcia claims the summary of his own report is "materially incomplete" and contains "erroneous representations"
20 November 2014 - Garcia and Fifa ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert agree to release the full copy of the report to the organisation's compliance chief, Domenico Scala
This time though we do not know who exactly is making the allegations. So do not expect this to finally prove the tipping point that means that Russia and Qatar are about to lose the right to host the World Cup, or that Sepp Blatter is now certain to be denied a fifth term as Fifa president.
In fact, just as these latest allegations went to press, Blatter appeared stronger than ever, reportedly securing the full support of the Asian Football Confederation at its 60th anniversary celebrations in Manila.
Blatter may have lost all credibility here in the UK. He may have lost the support of Uefa ahead of next year's presidential election. But elsewhere it seems he has no such concerns.
And no doubt at Fifa House in Zurich, these latest allegations will be dismissed by many as just another conveniently-timed attempt by a negative English media to deflect attention from its country's own failed bid.
Having said all that, these latest allegations do raise some very serious questions.
Why exactly was the England bid spying on its rivals, and how comfortable should we be with that? Does the database of intelligence exist, where is it, and what form does it take? Does it contain any clear evidence to back up some of the sensational claims of vote-selling and collusion referred to, especially when it comes to Russia and Qatar? Why exactly has it taken until now for these claims to come to light? Is it true England 2018 "agreed a collusion pact with the South Korea 2022 bid on the eve of the secret ballot" in a breach of Fifa's rules? Will these allegations be of interest to Michael Garcia - the American lawyer who last week opened formal proceedings against "a number of individuals" including three Fifa Exco members following his disputed investigation into the bidding process? Could they interest the Serious Fraud Office as it considers whether to launch a full criminal investigation in the UK - and whose ability to do so will be raised in an adjournment debate in the Commons on Monday?
It seems inevitable that latest allegations will heap yet more scrutiny on those that run the sport. They will no doubt lead to more demands that the full findings of Garcia's investigation are published. More calls by some for a boycott of the World Cup, and for a breakaway from Fifa.
More expectations that a realistic challenger - most likely Prince Ali of Jordan - will stand against Blatter next year. And that perhaps most importantly, more sponsors will turn their backs on an organisation and showpiece event that appear more tarnished than ever.
This week on a visit to Belfast, Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke expressed his hope that football could soon finally move on from the turmoil and tumult of recent weeks. That it might finally achieve closure after so many months and years of damaging allegations of corruption.
Today, such closure seems a long, long way off. This tawdry saga shows no sign of abating, and it shames the game - and those that run it.
Wales 'in a good place' - Jones
Alun Wyn Jones played for the British and Irish Lions team that beat South Africa 28-9 in the third Test in 2009. Alun Wyn Jones says Wales are "in a good place" as they prepare for World Cup year.
The Ospreys lock was part of a huge forward effort as Wales ended their autumn internationals with a 12-6 win over South Africa.
But as their fans celebrated Wales' second ever win over the Springboks, Jones was more measured.
"We finished on a positive but we can't let it paper over or let us forget the errors we need to work on," he said.
"There's pats on the back behind closed doors, but we know there's a lot to work on.
Highlights: Wales 12-6 South Africa"There's going to be lots of rugby to be played whether it's domestic or international [before the 2015 World Cup] and I can't promise we're going to be any better, but we know where we are.
"People will disagree and they're entitled to do that, but we're in a good place."
The victory over South Africa came at the end of a month that saw Wales fall just short in the 33-28 defeat by Australia and concede three tries in the last 10 minutes of the 34-16 loss against New Zealand.
But after a run of one win in 27 matches against the southern hemisphere's "big three", coach Warren Gatland admitted it was a win Wales "desperately needed".
And Jones believes the timing of the victory was perfect for Wales after the "peaks and troughs" of Wales' autumn campaign.
"I think I did an interview at the start [of the autumn series] and I said from my personal point of view - having experienced a World Cup in the past - that the World Cup year is the calendar year 2015.
"From a rugby point of view this is the end of the start."
Wales' next international is against England in the opening game of the Six Nations Championship in Cardiff on Friday, 6 February.
They also face England in their pool of the 2015 World Cup, along with Australia, Fiji and Uruguay in September and October 2015.

Sam Warburton was making his 49th appearance for Wales in the win over South Africa.
Coach Warren Gatland believes Wales can win the World Cup in 2015 "if we get the bounce of the ball".
Wales beat South Africa 12-6 in Cardiff, ending a run of 22 consecutive defeats against the southern hemisphere "big three".
The New Zealander says the win is an important landmark for his side.
"It's nice to win today, we've wounded one of the big beasts... it's one of the stepping stones to what we're trying to achieve," said Gatland.
"The long-term goal is to win the World Cup.
"And I think we're good enough to do that if we get the bounce of the ball, and a couple of things go our way.
Sam Warburton hails 'amazing' victory"[But] it's going to take a lot of hard work between now and the next eight to 10 months."
Wales' triumph over the Springboks - only their second ever - came six years to the day after their previous win over one of rugby's southern powers - the 21-18 victory against Australia on 29 November, 2008.
Afterwards Gatland said his team had "desperately needed" to win after a string of near misses against South Africa, New Zealand and the Wallabies.
He also reiterated that the Welsh management's approach to the autumn internationals was as preparation for the World Cup in September and October 2015.
Wales face hosts England, Australia, Fiji and Uruguay in one of the toughest qualifying pools.
"I keep saying that our whole focus is to make sure that we qualify out of our group, the pool of death next year," added Gatland.
"That's what our focus is on.
"The way we approached this autumn and the way we approach the Six Nations... the long-term goal is to make the quarter-finals of the World Cup and if we don't do that it's going to be a huge disappointment."
"A win like today (against South Africa) and going toe to toe with the All Blacks for 69 minutes, being in front against Australia as well - we've learned from those experiences.
"And we'll be able to draw back on them and it will make us mentally stronger - [give us] that mental toughness and edge that can hopefully take us to that next level."
Captain Sam Warburton believes the challenge for Wales is to be able to beat teams such as South Africa on a regular basis.
"We don't want this to happen once in a blue moon and celebrate like we've won the World Cup," said the Cardiff Blues flanker.
"If we want to be world beaters - which is what we want to do - and to win the World Cup, this has got to be the standard we expect now year-in, year-out and hopefully kick on from here."
