"Mama dulu penyanyi dulu penyanyi keroncong.

Tom Kill Jerry sempat merajai banyak pentas seni sekolah lewat 'Kasmaran', 'In My Heart' dan 'Gameboy'.

Aura Kasih Coba-coba Bawakan Lagu Armada

Personel Lebih Religius, Matta Tak Mau Berubah Haluan Musik

Jakarta - Agak lama tak terdengar kiprahnya, Band Matta merilis single terbaru berjudul 'Aku Jadi Kurus'.

Sunu pun mengungkapkan alasan kenapa bandnya tetap mengusung genre dangdut melayu.

"Kita sebelumnya pernah bikin rock, jazz, tapi fans kurang menerima. Fansnya Matta ingin kita kembali ke lagu-lagu Matta yang dulu lagi, ya itu kembali ke dangdut melayu," jelas Sunu.

Namun, sang gitaris Igoy mengatakan, lagu tersebut tetap memiliki perbedaan dengan single-single Matta sebelumnya. Yaitu dalam proses penggarapan.

"Bedanya ini kita lebih matengin ke proses aransemen, teknik rekaman, tapi secara genre lirik ya Matta memang gini. Penggarapan lumayan lama, kita nggak pengen ngeluarinnya asal-asalan, garap aransemen serius, rekaman serius sampai enam bulan," jelasnya.

Lindungi Rumput GBK, Promotor Konser One Direction Gunakan Grass Cover Kelas Internasional

Baca Juga: Promotor: Konser One Direction Tetap Jalan Minggu Depan

"Kita pasti merawat keutuhan GBK. Kami gunakan grass cover bertaraf internasional, bukan lokal.

Next »

Volvo is working on cordless charging for electric cars

Volvo is working on cordless charging for electric cars

An electric car would be able to recharge its battery without contact with the charger. Photo by Volvo

Imagine not having to actually plug in your electric car (assuming you have an electric car to plug in) and instead just parking it over a special parking spot. That's the promise of a new technology that Volvo is working on, and if taken to the mass market once made commercially viable, it means electric cars would be able to recharge just by sitting over a charger built into the parking spot's surface. That would certainly eliminate the need for those bulky upright chargers that are spreading around the country. They're not spreading all that quickly, we might add, with the costs of buying and installing chargers at publicly accessible parking spaces proving a tough sell for infrastructure owners.

Volvo has been working on a technology that might make it easier for parking-spot owners to attract electric cars and for electric-car owners to recharge their cars' batteries. The heart of this emerging technology is inductive charging, which uses an electromagnetic field instead of a cord to transfer energy between the charger and the car's battery receptacle. This involves a second induction coil, which would pick up power from the electromagnetic field emitted by the charger, and convert it back into electrical energy, which, in turn, charges the battery. Believe it or not, the basic technology behind this is already present in some common household appliances -- even things like electrical toothbrushes -- but it just hasn't been applied to transferring power to an electric car's battery.

Volvo Car Group, along with partners Bombardier, Inverto and Van Hool, has been studying this technology at a research cluster in Flanders, with Volvo contributing a Volvo C30 Electric, a version not available in the U.S. market, we should point out.

“Inductive charging has great potential. Cordless technology is a comfortable and effective way to conveniently transfer energy. The study also indicates that it is safe. There is not yet any common standard for inductive charging. We will continue our research and evaluate the feasibility of the technology in our hybrid- and electric-car projects” said Lennart Stegland, vice president of electric propulsion systems at Volvo Car Group.

Ultimately, the promise of this technology is electric-car chargers that are built into the ground or lie flat on the ground, just inches from a car's bottom. They wouldn't take up extra space and would be almost as easy to install as the upright chargers we currently see.

“The tests demonstrated that our Volvo C30 Electric can be fully charged without a power cable in about two and a half hours. In parallel with this, we have also conducted research into slow and regular charging together with Inverto, which was also a partner in the project,” said Stegland.

So far Volvo has been able to reduce the technology to a prototype charger and a prototype vehicle configured to convert an electromagnetic field into electricity that it can store in its battery. It is not clear yet when or where we'll see the first commercial applications of this technology.

Volvo crashes electric C30 to prove its safety

Volvo crashes electric C30 to prove its safety

Volvo's crash-tested C30 Electric on display at the Detriot Auto Show proved to be just as safe as the C30 with an internal-combustion engine. Photo by Photo by Michelle Koueiter

Electric cars can be as safe as gasoline-powered cars, a fact Volvo graphically demonstrated at the Detroit auto show by displaying a crashed C30.

The C30 electric car was put through a 40 percent offset front crash test at 40 mph--considered one of the toughest crash tests--in December. The battery-powered C30 proved to be just as safe as the same model with a conventional engine, Volvo said.

The automaker said its tests show that separating the battery pack from the car's crumple zones is one key factor for safety.

“The test produced exactly the results we expected,” Volvo spokesperson Jan Ivarsson said. “The front deformed and distributed the crash energy as we expected. Both the batteries and the cables that are part of the electric system remained entirely intact after collision.”

Volvo says the structure of an electric car is significantly different from that of a conventional car, which poses a number of safety challenges.

In the electric C30, for example, the battery takes up much more space than a fuel tank. A battery pack big enough to give the car a 95-mile range weighs 660 pounds--a large mass that needs to be secure in a crash.

Furthermore, the electric motor occupies less space under the hood than an internal-combustion engine usually does in a car, so front crumple zones have to be reinforced in the front to absorb increased collision energy from the battery's weight.

Autoweek Logo

Volvo partnered with Ener1 for the C30's lithium-ion battery pack. The companies spent two years developing the car.

Ener1 said retrofitting a battery pack into an existing vehicle while maintaining the same safety standards required an intense collaborative effort with Volvo.

Volvo will roll out a test fleet of electric C30s in Europe and the United States within the next few months with an eight-city tour.

Volvo plans to eventually use the engineering lessons in its future electric cars.

Subaru Cross Sport Concept Bows at Tokyo

Subaru Cross Sport Concept Bows at Tokyo

The Subaru Cross Sport is a wagon/shooting brake/SUV crossover that rides on the BRZ. Photo by Mark Vaughn

With little fanfare, Subaru showed two promising concepts at the Tokyo show, both based on iconic Subaru performance cars.

The Cross Sport Design Concept is an SUV/wagon body that rides on RWD BRZ mechanicals. Think of it as a BRZ wagon, offering the nimble tossability of the sporty BRZ coupe with the roomy practicality of a wagon. It's the best of both worlds. While the engine could be the same 2.0-liter flat four from the BRZ, the concept gets Subaru's Lineartronic CVT driving the rear wheels. This is disconcerting to the enthusiast, but the new WRX, revealed hours later at the Los Angeles auto show, also gets a CVT. Let's hope Subaru offers at least the option of a manual. If it doesn't, then it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment to tease us with such a promising configuration as this only to sap the life out of it with a CVT. We'll have to wait to drive it before passing final judgment, though. Assuming the concept reaches production.

The shooting brake Cross Sport is 169 inches long, 72 inches wide, 54 inches high and rides on a wheelbase of 103 inches. That's just a few inches bigger in every dimension than the BRZ. But the idea of a car this fun and this practical represents an ideal solution for sports car drivers with families and not enough money to buy a Ferrari FF. No other details about the engine were available, but if this is platform sharing, bring it on (minus the CVT).

About the Tokyo Motor Show

The Viziv, meanwhile, rides on Subaru WRX mechanicals. While it was shown at Geneva, Subaru parked the goofily named Viviz opposite the Cross Sport at its Tokyo stand. The two make a good pair. However, the WRX is powered by a 265-hp 2.5-liter gas engine with a five-speed manual, while the Viviz has a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbo diesel flat four with direct injection assisted by three permanent magnet electric motors, one driving the front wheels and two spinning the rears. Like the Cross Sport, the Viviz has a Subaru Lineartronic CVT. So the Viviz drivetrain sounds considerably less sporty than its WRX progenitor. Power in the Vivz goes to all four wheels through Subaru's Symmetrical AWD.

“Subaru's Viziv Evolution Concept is the embodiment of Subaru's vision of the future,” the company said.

Minus the CVT and with some more power, that's a future we could look forward to.

Japan is once again among the leaders of the global auto industry, and the Tokyo Motor Show promises to showcase the best of what that country has to offer. From green cars to super cars, technology to design, 2013 promises to be a banner year for the Tokyo Motor show. Autoweek will be on the show floor, bringing you the latest Tokyo reviews, news, photo galleries, and videos right here.

Pricing Games: Volvo asks consumers to help determine price, sales target for C30

Pricing Games: Volvo asks consumers to help determine price, sales target for C30

Volvo is using consumers to help determine the pricing and sales volume of the C30 hatchback.

LOS ANGELES -- Perplexed about how to price and position its upcoming C30 hatchback, Volvo is trying an innovative form of market research.

Shoppers are being invited to outfit a C30 with options and packages on a Web site.

But the online price for the C30 keeps changing. Volvo is moving the sticker up and down like a yo-yo, testing the market to see what response it gets at various prices.

The prices listed for options keep changing, too.

The tactic is unusual, if not unprecedented.

But pricing the C30, which is scheduled to go on sale in North America in eight months, is tricky for Volvo. For one thing, the sporty three-door is not your garden-variety Volvo. For another, the weakness of the dollar against the euro and Swedish krona makes it hard to turn a profit on low-priced models.

Finally, Volvo isn't sure how many C30s it wants to sell in America - whether it will be a low-volume niche car or something more.

The idea of using a Web site to help sort out such questions came from Anne Belec, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America Inc., according to a company source. The site went live Jan. 27, and the base and options pricing on the site have been fluctuating ever since.

In flux

On March 8, Volvo listed a C30 at $24,970 for the base model and $28,270 loaded, not including a $695 destination charge. But on March 14, prices were $23,154 and $26,214. On March 22 the base price was $21,565 and the loaded price $24,415.

In all cases, the base model included a 218-hp turbo-five engine, six-speed manual transmission and 17-inch wheels.

Volvo spokesman James Hope says the company is using the feedback mostly to determine inventory allocations, not necessarily to set the price.

"The pricing is used to estimate the take rates of the options at the different pricing levels," Hope says. "This will help Volvo build the right mix of cars."

The site is not being used to take advanced orders, he added.

Volvo will announce the prices at the New York auto show in April.

Moving targets

Interviewed at the Geneva auto show this month, Volvo Car Corp. CEO Fredrik Arp said the automaker is still "debating whether we will have somewhat of an aggressive volume strategy or a very niche-oriented strategy" for the C30 in the United States.

Arp defined "aggressive" as a 20,000 sales target; a "niche" target would be 5,000. The niche model would have a lot of standard equipment, Arp said.

Autoweek Logo

He said Volvo will meet with dealers in the second quarter to get their marketing ideas.

Volvo needs the C30 to attract younger buyers, say U.S. dealers and some executives at Volvo Cars of North America. But their suggestions for lively exterior colors and a Mini-like marketing campaign have fallen on deaf ears in Sweden.

Factored into the U.S. strategy are the car's global sales, which have exceeded expectations since its debut in Europe late last year. Assembly capacity in Belgium is around 65,000 units and could be as many as 75,000 with some tweaks, Arp said.

A Volvo North America source says U.S. annual sales are likely to be around 12,000 units.

C30 marketing is only one of Volvo's challenges this year. Top U.S. marketing executive Hans Krondahl is leaving in April to head Swedish supplier Meca. His final job will be to pick the winner of Volvo's $150 million U.S. advertising agency account review.

The new agency will be responsible for the C30 campaign, as well as for two other redesigned vehicles also arriving this fall: the V70 and XC70.

Tata will redo Nano for the U.S.

Tata will redo Nano for the U.S.

The new Nano will be far more sophisticated than the ultra-cheap model that has flopped in India despite a world of hype.

A redesigned version of India's no-frills Nano minicar will come to the United States in three years, said Ratan Tata, the billionaire boss of that country's giant Tata Group.

"The U.S. is a very enticing market," Tata said in an interview. "We are redesigning the Nano for both Europe and the U.S."

He said the new Nano will be far more sophisticated than the ultra-cheap model that has flopped in India despite a world of hype.

It will get a bigger engine and "more bells and whistles," including such features as power steering and traction control. Tata said it will be priced below $10,000.

What the 74-year-old industrialist did not say is how he intends to sell it here. Tata has no U.S. retail network.

The existing Nano, an egg-shaped four-seater, was developed for India as an alternative to scooters. At 122 inches long, it is nearly two feet shorter than a Mini, and it has a two-cylinder, rear-mounted engine with 37 hp. Tata, whose company owns Jaguar and Land Rover, conceived the Nano as the world's cheapest car. It went on sale in 2009 with a price tag of about $2,500.

Autoweek Logo

He said a car priced below $10,000 would have appeal in the United States.

"The Smart and the Fiat 500 have high sticker prices, and people buy them because they are small cars," said Tata at the opening of a Jaguar Land Rover dealership here. "But everyone knows you put a lot of money into it. We hope that the sub-$10,000 car has appeal."

Tata said it was "too premature," to talk about a U.S. sales channel for the Nano.

"We have to give a lot of thought to how we would distribute the car," he said

Andy Goss, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America, said there have been no discussions about using Jaguar Land Rover dealers to sell the Nano.

Detroit auto show: Volvo rolls out another electric C30

Another electric Volvo C30 will be revealed at the Detroit auto show. This follows an earlier prototype shown at the Frankfurt show in September. Photo by Volvo

Volvo is bringing another battery-powered electric C30 to the Detroit auto show in January.

This one grabs the baton from an earlier prototype shown at the Frankfurt show in September, which was drivable. The Detroit show car, however, adds a full interior with instrumentation and enhanced battery packaging.

Volvo says it plans to make a test fleet of 50 battery-powered C30s for a two-year trial starting in 2011.

The electric C30 will seat four, just as the conventional car does, and the biggest change is in the interior. The instrument panel shows only the road speed and energy consumption, and there's a new gauge for the status of the battery charge.

Autoweek Logo

The car has no gears, and full power is available immediately. The lithium-ion batteries can be charged in a household socket or at roadside station; a full charge takes eight hours.

Top speed is about 81 mph with a fully charged battery pack, and acceleration to 60 mph is accomplished in 10.5 seconds. The range is 93 miles, which Volvo says covers the daily driving for 90 percent of European motorists. The batteries weigh 617 pounds.

“The first prototype helped us identify the main technological challenges, such as battery packaging and safety issues,” Lennart Stegland, Volvo special vehicles director, said in a statement.

“We have addressed these challenges without compromising the C30's personality. I am very happy with the result. The electric C30 in Detroit is a much more complete product.”

The 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition will be available in the United States in limited numbers for a sticker price of $32,445, including $895 in destination.

The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine receives an upgrade of 23 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque, leading to a total output of 250 hp and 273 lb-ft. Volvo says the power boost comes from increasing airflow into the combustion chambers and advancing spark timing.

This is a welcome improvement to the C30, which just needed a bit of extra oomph to compete with the Mazda MazdaSpeed 3 and Volkswagen GTI.

Volvo also says that the increases don't change the fuel-consumption numbers, which remain at 21 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Highway mileage gets a bump when the five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission is installed.

The sport chassis, which is standard on the R-Design, is also standard on the Polestar. When compared to the base C30, stiffness is increased by 30 percent, the dampers are designed to build up pressure quicker and the steering ratio is 10 percent quicker.

The exterior is enhanced with 17-inch Styx alloy wheels with a matte black finish. Polestar badges adorn the rear and sides of the vehicle. All of the special models will wear a coat of Volvo's new rebel blue paint. The Polestar is based on the R-Design model, which gets a body-colored body kit, R-Design logos, watch-dial instrument cluster and a sport steering wheel and pedals.

Each C30 Polestar will have a numbered plaque inside, noting the uniqueness of the ride. Leather seats are standard with a choice of off black or two-tone off black and calcite. It comes with a version of the company's Premium Plus trim level including a power sunroof, power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED running lights, keyless drive and xenon headlights. Customers can add the Platinum trim, which improves the radio, and adds navigation and satellite radio.

Like all Volvos, the special edition comes with traction and stability control, side-impact protection and whiplash protection.

Only 250 C30 Polestar Limited Editions will be offered, and they arrive in November, so if you're interested, call your local Volvo dealer and get on the list.

A look at Volvo future products: New engines, architecture on the way

A look at Volvo future products: New engines, architecture on the way

The next Volvo S80, due in 2015, could take styling cues from the Volvo You concept, shown.

Volvo wants to derive economies of scale from a new front-wheel-drive architecture called SPA, for Scalable Platform Architecture.

The redesigned XC90 crossover due in 2014 will be the first to use the architecture.

SPA was designed for a new family of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines that Volvo will begin using on existing models next fall. Eventually, the new four-cylinders will replace all of Volvo's current five- and six-cylinder engines.

Volvo is also considering whether to offer a gasoline hybrid on the XC60 or S60 in 2014 or to wait on new SPA-based new models.

The Swedish brand also wants to build cars in North America, possibly with a partner such as Fiat, and to share development costs on smaller cars. Volvo is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

Autoweek Logo

C30: A redesigned or re-engineered version of the hatchback is likely in the next few years.

C70: A redesign of the hardtop convertible is due in several years.

S60: The S60 sedan will be freshened in 2013 and redesigned three or four years later.

XC60: The crossover will be redesigned in 2016 and share components with the new-generation S60 sedan.

XC70: The tall wagon may be replaced in 2015 or 2016, based on the redesigned S80.

S80: The large sedan will be replaced in 2015 and switch to Volvo's new platform architecture. It likely will take styling cues from the Volvo You concept.

XC90: The redesigned crossover debuts in 2014. It will be the first to use SPA. Design changes are expected, but the rounded shoulders that have been on most Volvo models since the 1990s will remain. Company executives have said the XC90 will have "more luxurious proportions."

Large flagship sedan: Volvo has shown concepts, including the Volvo You four-door fastback at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show. It is unclear whether a car based on that concept will be produced. Volvo executives say they don't want a vehicle to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-class or BMW 7 series.

Driving Toyota's Pro/Celebrity Scion FR-S race cars

At the Streets of Willow Springs, there's a back straightaway that crests over a downhill and into a series of sudden, unsettling left turns. It's one of the most dramatic parts of the track, one that always trips up timid run groups. And as it turns out, heading blindly at 90 miles per hour, skimming the cones of the artificial chicane normally designed to slow lesser drivers who aren't Formula Drift prodigy Ken Gushi, will really put the fear of mortality into anyone who's signed up to ride shotgun -- especially when the car is the brand-new Scion FR-S race car for Toyota's Pro/Celebrity Race Series, here on its first outing.

Don't break it -- someone famous needs to drive it.

Toyota launched the Pro/Celebrity Race in 1977 alongside the Grand Prix of Long Beach. There are two classes, celebrities and professional drivers, who race the 2-mile Grand Prix street course for 10 laps. Pro drivers are in red cars; celebrities in blue, white or silver. San Diego Chargers wide receiver Shelly Novack won the first event, while Sam Posey won in the Pro class. Over the years, the list of celebrities has included Keanu Reeves, Buzz Aldrin, Cameron Diaz, Goldberg, Ingo Rademacher (who played Jasper "Jax" Jacks on General Hospital, in case you weren't aware), and John Elway, which coincides nicely with his Manhattan Beach Toyota dealership. Bruce Jenner won it twice. (Son Brody raced last year but finished midpack.) Jason Bateman won it at the tender age of 18. Both Lorenzo Lamas and Donny Osmond tried their hands at professional racing after participating in the series. Father and son James and Josh Brolin won it in 1978 and 2000, respectively, which must lead to fun reminiscing at Thanksgiving. Frankie Muniz won in 2005, a victory undoubtedly spurred by his purchase of the Volkswagen Jetta from "The Fast and the Furious."

Each entrant gets a charity of their choice that receives a donation if they win, and Toyota makes a contribution itself. Toyota's charity of choice is "Racing for Kids," which arranges visits from racing drivers to children's hospitals and is expected to take in more than $100,000 in donations.

Glam studio show reveals little interior mods. Photo by Scion

Chuck Wade is the director of Toyota's Motorsports Garage, a jack of all trades for the company's various racing projects. They hired him for design and engineering "but I'm a damn good mechanic and a damn good fabricator," he informs us with an air of authority. He works on anything within Toyota's skunkworks engineering department -- projects as diverse as SEMA show cars and restoring vehicles for the Toyota Museum, even pushing a Prius to a hybrid land speed record at Bonneville. The Celebrity race cars are his specialty, something he's been doing since 1996.

The challenge Wade faces is tailoring the FR-S to celebrities of all backgrounds and driving records. He rattles off a list of past luminaries. "We designed this car for Lil' Kim, Al Unser Jr., Mary Lou Retton, John Salley."

Lil' Kim, for example: "Never drove a car. Grew up in New York City. Then you get powerful, come out here and someone drives you around." Wade instructed her for the series. "She did a damn good job. To have someone who's never driven a car before…we get guys who have never driven stick shifts. We have to design this car for everyone."

"Do you expect carnage?" One reporter asked.

"Yes," Wade explained. "These celebrities, they flail around a lot…so, uh, we disconnected the windshield wipers."

streets-of-willow.jpg

Accesorize your ride! Accessorize your life! Photo by Scion

The FR-S Celebrity car serves as a rolling advertorial for TRD's rapidly expanding FR-S catalog. The engine is completely stock, save for a TRD cold air intake. A bolt-on TRD exhaust rounds out the back, but the midpipe is custom Toyota: a straight pipe with no resonators anywhere and no second catalytic converter. It's purely to sound mean as the cars fly down Shoreline Drive. The cars run on 100-octane race fuel -- there's no performance gain, but it levels out the knock sensors for even running. All together, the exhaust and intake add 11 to 12 horsepower -- "but we just say 10," smiled Wade.

The interior is gutted for the most part, and Wade's team fabricated an axle-to-axle roll cage that's beautifully integrated into the headliner. Not much else is needed, not even door bars. "We found that the stock car crashes damn good. We want to keep that."

Brakes are slotted 328mm rotors balanced by larger TRD 4-piston calipers up front, stock brakes in the rear, and Hawk DTC-60 track-only pads on all four corners. TRD would like to make the larger calipers available on the market, but like many of the parts on the car, it's still undergoing stringent development and certification. Bolt-on brakes are coming soon, Wade swears, as a direct bolt-on that even retains the backing plate.

The overall result is a mishmash of TRD accessories and custom engineering, undertaken by Wade and his small team of 3. (The TRD sway bars, for example, are off-the shelf but attached via custom end links.) One part that won't ever make it to production, however, is the trick suspension: custom-built by Eibach, they're beautiful slim, shiny, red-springed units with adjustable height, but that's about it -- Toyota found that the drivers in the Pro class were bringing their own mechanics to perform their best Smokey Yunick impression. Want a set of your own? Wade is here to dash your dreams: "they'll never be marketed by TRD." Instead, there will be lowering springs available; expect a drop of 1-2 inches. The speed bumps of Los Angeles will remain unfazed.

In fact, the FR-S is slower than the Scion tC coupes that were fielded last year—because those cars had TRD centrifugal superchargers, and "people were going 140 miles per hour down the back straight," said Wade. "The engineers wanted to dial that back a little so it wouldn't get ugly. The FR-Ss should do about 120, 125 instead. Much safer."

Safer still, without windshield wipers.

V4-130319965.jpg

When he's not driving, Ken Gushi likes jumping over his cars. Photo by Scion

We strapped ourselves into the bright red Simpson five-point harnesses. Wrapped around the 18-inch TRD wheels are 225-series Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 tires (215 up front) -- and here, on track at Willow Springs, they make a world of difference. Where the stock car grips adequately on canyon sweepers, the demanding surface of the track requires all the grip a driver can provide. Here the FR-S is balanced, eminently controllable -- the rear end feels like it will slide out, but it's very easy to ease it back into place.

Amateurs will love it. We did.

The exhaust also sounds like no factory-approved FR-S ever will, an undeniable rasp that rises above the boom like Tom Waits gargling bumblebees. Even the shifter felt more precise; we had to ask whether the TRD quick shifter had been installed. Nope: that's all natural, baby.

We drove steadily but conservatively, keeping in mind Scion's earlier warning about getting a wheel off. (One word: "don't.") Afterwards, we hitched a ride with Ken Gushi: past Formula Drift champion, real-life Takumi, resident Toyota hot-shoe. He won the Pro class in 2011. And underneath his carbon fiber helmet we could tell that he wanted desperately to produce a "dab of oppo," as some say -- perhaps a big smoky tail-happy arc all the way around Willow's big 20-degree banked corner.

No, Gushi was in full time-attack mode: hard braking, stomping on the throttle, what seemed to be little finesse on the surface but was undoubtedly full of careful inputs. He took his apexes late -- like a drifter's line, as if he would correct for this late entry by swinging the rear wide. Almost like cheating. At two occasions he dipped a wheel juuust off the edge of the pavement, the control arm banging against the cracked asphalt. He swore, audibly.

"That Ken really likes to late brake," a fellow journalist observed after we got out of the car.

Gushi gave Toyota input on developing the FR-S. And while it may not be up to par with what he races in Formula Drift -- a Cosworth-built turbocharged Scion FR-S with 540 horsepower -- it's sharp, fun, and will look good screaming down Long Beach on April 20. As long as the celebrities don't flail around too much.

Classic vs. Modern: Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ vs. Datsun 280Z

Classic vs. Modern: Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ vs. Datsun 280Z

The authors recently sold Nissan 280Z.

My interest in cars remains stuck in the early 1970s--when I was spending most of my time trying to retrieve the copies of AutoWeek that had been confiscated by my second grade teacher, Mrs. Wilks.

While my iPod may be full of downloads from the likes of Dirty Pretty Things, The Kooks and Grizzly Bear (and very little from Led Zeppelin, the Stones or Pink Floyd), my garage contains nothing built after 1991. And frankly, I like it that way.

Not much in the way of new cars gets me particularly excited. But I have to admit to taking a huge shine to the totally hot “Subion” twins, the FR-S and BRZ, probably because they remind me of the Datsun 240Z, 260Z and the pair of 280Zs that have occupied my garage from time to time. Naturally, I have to wonder how they'd stack up against the FR-S and BRZ as daily drivers in terms of satisfaction and cost of ownership.

As a daily driver, the 280Z makes more sense than a 240 or a 260Z. The combination of electronic fuel injection, an available 5-speed (the last year and a half only), bumpers capable of standing up to a parallel parking incursions and really good factory A/C make it the most practical (if not the prettiest) of the first generation Z-cars.

As expected, performance-wise it's not really close, with 0-60 times in the mid sixes for the moderns vs. the high-eights for the classic Z-car. Fuel economy? The comparison gets even harsher. Around town, I usually see about 17 mpg and 24 mpg on the highway in my 280Z. Not bad for a mid-'70s performance car but just pitiful in comparison to the moderns. The BRZ with a manual transmission is rated at 22 city, 30 highway and 25 mpg combined.

While I view both the FR-S and the BRZ as extremely good-looking cars, I give the edge to the Z, which has so many styling cues cribbed from other great GT cars like the E-Type and Toyota 2000GT. I am, after all, terminally mired in the automotive past.

Still, the exhaust note, the higher percentage of admiring glances and appreciation in value will make the Z a better proposition in the long haul, right? Probably not. It sort of depends on where you live: As rear-drivers, neither the moderns nor the Z-car can really be expected to do all that well in the winter without a set of Blizzaks or Nokkians.

The real difference is the fact that neither the Scion nor the Subie will look like the remains of the Titanic after just two winters. Early Z-cars were rusters of the highest magnitude. And while you'll likely not spend much maintaining the mechanicals (early Z-cars are notoriously reliable), the super clean, low-mileage, rust-free 280Z that you might pay more than 13 grand for today (according to the Hagerty Price Guide) will likely be a three grand project car after a few winters of salt exposure.

While it's too early to tell for certain, I would expect the FR-S and BRZ to enjoy Mini Cooper-like resale value. Sadly, if used as a daily driver in most parts of the country, the classic Z-car will cost far more to own over three or four years than the Scion or the Subie simply by virtue of its flimsy construction and nonexistent rust-proofing. This round of classics versus moderns goes to the moderns.

2008 Volvo C30 Version 1.0

2008 Volvo C30 Version 1.0

Version 1.0 of Volvo's C30 comes with plenty of good stuff, for less than $25,000.

OUR TAKE: There's a lot to like about this Version 1.0--starting with the basic fact that, for under $25,000, you get a Volvo. And even though it is a relatively inexpensive Volvo, it still comes with a lot of niceties that make it worth the money: the plush, high-style interior with the cool "floating" center stack; excellent, supportive and super-safe seats; a strong turbo engine and six-speed that seem almost too good for a car with this price tag.

It also gets smaller rims and a softer suspension than the previous Version 2.0 model we tested. The good news is that we still liked it quite a bit. The smaller tires got the power to the ground sufficiently, with some tire chirping during the first- to second-gear change, but did have a tough time turning the ship when shooting around corners with expected front-wheel-drive understeer tendencies.

The softer suspension and taller sidewalls of the 17-inch tires did give it a better ride around town. And we received a fair amount of positive reaction from people out and about; a fellow motorist even flashed a thumbs-up when stopped at a light. Maybe America is finally warming up to the idea of the hatchback.

Another nice thing about the 1.0 versus the 2.0 is a $3,000 base price savings. You don't get the premium sound system, body kit, larger exhaust tips and stiffer suspension, but you still get a quick little hatchback with standout styling. If you do plan on driving it hard and maybe taking it out for a track day or auto cross, the 2.0 is worth the extra loot and keeps your warranty intact.

Buyers, however, need only beware that this is a true four-seater--there's no place in the rear seat to put a fifth buddy even if you want to. Otherwise, it's a near perfect, fun-to-drive hatchback with great exterior styling, cozy and sharp interior and great driving dynamics for a front-driver.

Rough idle problem hits Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ coupes: Automakers say fault lies in engine control unit

Rough idle problem hits Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ coupes: Automakers say fault lies in engine control unit

The Subaru BRZ, shown, is the mechanical twin of the Scion FR-S.

Toyota and Subaru are grappling with reports of rough idle and stalling conditions on their new sporty coupes.

The problems on initial batches of the Subaru BRZ coupe and its Scion FR-S twin--known as the Toyota FT-86 outside the United States--is being caused by a software mapping glitch.

Toyota Motor Corp. and Subaru, a unit of Fuji Heavy Industries, developed the sporty cars jointly. And except for some badging and front fascia differences, they are basically clones.

Toyota and Subaru officials say the problem is simply a software bug and that there is no mechanical defect.

But some owners of the coupes disagree, saying the suggested fix hasn't kept the problem from recurring.

Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said that when the engine control unit (ECU) is installed, it adapts to the car's powertrain and owner's driving patterns, a process known as adaptive learning. Within 100 miles, those settings are basically frozen in the ECU.

With the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ coupes, some of the software coding that allows the ECU to establish a "handshake" with the engine is in error. The ECU monitors certain driving conditions, and when the engine is found to be out of tolerance, the software picks up an anomaly.

When this happens, the ECU triggers a fault code. As the ECU tries to find an optimal driving condition outside its prescribed tolerances, a rough idle or stalling situation ensues. Typically, the check engine light illuminates and a fault code of P0019 shows up on diagnostic readers.

Toyota's fix: If the car has less than 100 miles on it, a technician will reflash the ECU with the correct software mapping. If the car has more than 100 miles, the mechanic should replace the ECU.

"It does involve the variable valve timing but it does not involve a mechanical repair," Lyons said. He said the rough idle is the result of the ECU's attempting to work around its detection of the anomaly, rather than what is triggering the fault code. The reflash "broadens the tolerance of detection."

Subaru's explanation

Intriguingly, while Subaru agrees that ECU mapping is the cause, the automaker believes an ECU reflash is the only necessary repair.

"This is not a mileage-dependent condition. No replacement of the ECU is needed at any mileage to rectify the issue. The ECU re-flash is the fix. There is not a defect concerning the ECU," Subaru spokesman Dominick Infante said.

Toyota's ECU programming is being handled by field technical specialists, rather than dealership service techs, resulting in longer-than-normal repair waits for customers, Lyons said. "Our field offices are coordinating the remedies."

Lyons said all cars that have arrived at a dealership since mid-August should already be reflashed with the correct ECU software mapping. And not every car built before then will have the handshake issue, because "it's a combination of parts, tolerances and interactions between the car and ECU" that can trigger the fault.

Angry customers

As performance coupes, these cars are attracting coveted enthusiast buyers and brand evangelists. But their vocal owners have not been pleased to see their vehicles underperform.

"Mine's on the third week in the shop. Parts are on back-order," a Scion FR-S owner in Washington state known as "Alrashwa" wrote on the FT86club.com Web site. "VVTi cam gear and oil control valve are what they claimed to be replacing. Waiting on gaskets which are on back-order, apparently."

Others on the forum say they have had replacements performed of the camshaft bearing, cam gears, actuators and cam position sensors.

Subaru's Infante called the condition "extremely rare." However, the FT86club had more than 100 registered complaints. What's more, several members who have had the ECU reflashed or replaced said the fix didn't stop the problem from recurring, resulting in other engine fault codes and additional service lane visits.

Toyota and Subaru officials declined to say how many cars could be affected or how many complaints have been filed.
