2008 Volvo C30 Version 1.0

2008 Volvo C30 Version 1.0

Version 1.0 of Volvo's C30 comes with plenty of good stuff, for less than $25,000.

OUR TAKE: There's a lot to like about this Version 1.0--starting with the basic fact that, for under $25,000, you get a Volvo. And even though it is a relatively inexpensive Volvo, it still comes with a lot of niceties that make it worth the money: the plush, high-style interior with the cool "floating" center stack; excellent, supportive and super-safe seats; a strong turbo engine and six-speed that seem almost too good for a car with this price tag.

It also gets smaller rims and a softer suspension than the previous Version 2.0 model we tested. The good news is that we still liked it quite a bit. The smaller tires got the power to the ground sufficiently, with some tire chirping during the first- to second-gear change, but did have a tough time turning the ship when shooting around corners with expected front-wheel-drive understeer tendencies.

The softer suspension and taller sidewalls of the 17-inch tires did give it a better ride around town. And we received a fair amount of positive reaction from people out and about; a fellow motorist even flashed a thumbs-up when stopped at a light. Maybe America is finally warming up to the idea of the hatchback.

Another nice thing about the 1.0 versus the 2.0 is a $3,000 base price savings. You don't get the premium sound system, body kit, larger exhaust tips and stiffer suspension, but you still get a quick little hatchback with standout styling. If you do plan on driving it hard and maybe taking it out for a track day or auto cross, the 2.0 is worth the extra loot and keeps your warranty intact.

Buyers, however, need only beware that this is a true four-seater--there's no place in the rear seat to put a fifth buddy even if you want to. Otherwise, it's a near perfect, fun-to-drive hatchback with great exterior styling, cozy and sharp interior and great driving dynamics for a front-driver.
