The Alfa Romeo 4C Spider is getting ready for its reveal and market roll-out, which means it's time to put together broadcast materials, and that means the open-roof coupe has to venture outside. Someone caught a few photos of a yellow example during one such jaunt in Andalusia, Spain during photo and television work, and based on this glimpse we'll happily welcome it to our shores.
Yes, we felt the same way when we saw the concept introduced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and except for two small changes, it's the same car. This production version has an air inlet on the driver's side just ahead of the rear wheel said to improve cooling for the dual-clutch transmission, and the centrally mounted exhaust pipes on the concept have moved to the corners. It also wears the concept's wheels and the conventional headlights, instead of the arachnid units best suited for getting the attention of mating wolf spiders.
We shouldn't have too much longer to wait for information on the car's weight gain and performance, as well as its roof panel operation. I have great confidence that Alfa Romeo will be able to establish a healthy global as well as an strong American market for themselves. Part of that confidence comes from Sergio Marchionne and his vision and management talent and the financial commitment he has made to the brand. Part of that confidence comes from the Chrysler side of the business, where Marchionne has an ability to put aside preconceived and mostly baseless negativity about Fiat and/or Chrysler and truly identify and utilize the strengths and unique assets of the various brands to take FCA on a path to success as one company with one global vision. Daimler would not accept or allow Chrysler to intrude on any of it's product, refused to recognize or accept Chrysler as an
equal and except for some initial cooperative ventures which were quite outstanding (Chrysler Crossfire,Pacifica, 300 and Dodge Charger), they abandoned their partners, raided and drained their cash reserves and discarded them like so much refuge, Fiat has overcome many of the obstacles to a truly united modern global automotive powerhouse. Yes Maserati has blossomed recently on the platform, engine and transmission of Chrysler....so what. Yes Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge are exploding on a modified Alfa Romeo platform...so what. FCA cares not where the talent of design comes from, nor should they, as long as the final product is world class and so far, indeed, it very much has been.
As to Alfa Romeo, it will have more of it's home grown product for it's exclusive and shared use coming quickly, but it will also be using more Chrysler developed hard wear in it's product mix and they must say loud and clear...so what. The challenge for FCA is to take the shared assets, tweak them enough to establish brand exclusivity and market the hell out of them in their own clearly established market niche, with an acceptable amount of overlap. Alfa Romeo, as well as all the FCA brands have very clear and distinctive identities and a very loyal customer base to build on and prosper side by side. In five to eight years the whole plan will work like a finely tuned machine or personal rivalries and non pragmatic decisions will destroy the vision. I see too much positive so far and so much potential in each brand to doubt that Chrysler will find a good fit for Alfa Romeo in the states. Not easy, clearly, but the prospects of success are exciting and real.
