Mysterious Maserati test mule could be upcoming Alfa Romeo Giulia
Well well well, what have we here? The truth is that we don't know. It seems to be a Maserati Ghibli, but since that model is already out on the market, we're likely looking at something else. Just what is the question, and the answer likely lies in the wheelbase. While this test mule, spied undergoing cold-weather testing in northern Sweden, is clearly wearing the bodywork (and likely most of the mechanical bits) from the Ghibli, it's riding on a shortened wheelbase. Which tells us this could be one of two things: it's likely to be a test mule either for the upcoming Maserati Alfieri sports car, or for the new Alfa Romeo Giulia.
The Alfieri was presented in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, foreshadowing a new sports car to serve as a halo model in the Maserati lineup. The production version is expected to be smaller and nimbler than the existing GranTurismo and positioned against the likes of the Porsche 911, Jaguar F-Type and Mercedes-AMG GT, to name just a few.

The Giulia, meanwhile, is slated to be the first all-new Alfa Romeo since the arrival of the 4C last year and the Italian marque's first mainstream model since the launch of the Giulietta in 2010. The new sedan is expected to go after the likes of the BMW 3 Series and the new Jaguar XE, slotting in below the larger Maserati Ghibli that seeks to challenge the 5 Series and XF. If this is indeed a test mule for the new Alfa sedan, the quad tailpipes would seem, as our spy photographers point out, to indicate it's laying the groundwork for the GTA performance version.
One way or another, there's something enticing to be coming soon from Italy, so watch this space.Featured GalleryMaserati Ghibli test mule spy shots

As a Chrysler guy I'm always thinking Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram when I see anything new from the Fiat side of the operation. The answer to your question may be found with this thinking. Although hotly denied by Maserati, the new Ghibli and Quatroporte have deep Chrysler roots. Any owner of a Chrysler 300 can quickly identify common structures between these cars, instantly. The Maserati engine is derived from the Chrysler Pentastar V-6 and the block is cast under Maserati specs on a special Chrysler engine manufacturing line to which Ferrari heads are added in Italy. It can be understood that a luxury brand like Maserati would shy away from these connections to preserve it's image, but this luxury brand is part of a larger automotive business network and the sharing of resources, developmental assets and costs is a part of that business and a reality that must exists in order to survive and profit. They have hit a home run with their Chrysler connection and they know it clearly. To the Alfa Romeo question, there are designs I've seen of a large, new, and strikingly beautiful Alfa luxury sedan which from the beginning was to be spun off the Chrysler/Maserati platform and this may be it. We know that Dodge and Alfa Romeo are deep into the co-development of a mid-size sedan and other associated models that may be based off this platform in a shortened version. When you think of the possible models that may be spun from these shared assets, you must think Chrysler 300, a Chrysler crossover SUV, now in final development, Dodge Charger, Challenger and Avenger and a bunch of Maserati and Alfa Romeo vehicles. As a Chrysler guy and 300 owner, it's great to see how good the Chrysler stuff really is and that brands like Maserati and Alfa Romeo recognize this and are willing to bet their future on the Chrysler designs. Bottom line: I'd bet it's an Alfa Romeo mule based off the aforementioned platform. Just smart business.
