Nico Rosberg and Mercedes hit the ground running in pre-season testing as they led the field in time and mileage on the morning of the opening F1 test of 2015 in Jerez.
Rosberg completed 61 laps by 13:00 before another long run just after, more than double his nearest rival, and topped the timesheets with a 1:23.106 set early in the morning before he started his longer runs. It was an impressive and strong start for Mercedes after they finished the 2014 season comfortably at the top of the pile.
A busy first day started with official car launches for Mercedes and Williams, but Red Bull grabbed the headlines as it revealed a striking black and white testing livery in the morning. Daniel Ricciardo took the wheel for the first day and completed 22 laps, one more than Red Bull managed in four troublesome days at Jerez last year. His time of 1:24.641 left him second at the mid-way point of the day.
Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso both debuted their new cars in the morning. Vettel emerged from the Ferrari garage as soon as the session started, sporting a new white helmet with the colours of the German flag down the centre. But his first morning with the SF15-T was disjointed and he completed 9 laps, ending the morning fifth fastest with a time of 1:25.764.
It took an hour for McLaren and Alonso to leave the garage in the MP4-30, with the new Honda-powered car spluttering out of the garage at 10:45 for an exploratory lap. Alonso completed just six laps in the morning with one flying lap on a three lap run at 1:40.738. However, the team was prepared for a slow start and will be working hard to get the car back on track in the afternoon.
Williams took the covers off the new FW37 in the morning but Valtteri Bottas was restricted to just four laps before lunch. The car was back out again in the afternoon briefly but it was a slow start for the team that was second best on the track at the end of last year.
Sauber's Marcus Ericsson hit the ground running with the C34 and completed 30 laps, the closest man to Rosberg's tally. Ericsson finished the morning third, 1.7s down on the benchmark of Rosberg, but the times are of little relevance. His car stopped on track just before 10:00 but despite plenty of smoke pouring from underneath the engine cover, it did not take long for the team to get him back out for more mileage.
Toro Rosso rookie Carlos Sainz Jr also took his first steps in the STR10 - launched in the paddock on Saturday evening - finishing the morning in fifth after completing 20 laps.
Lotus did not run on Sunday morning but the new car is now on its way to Jerez to take part later in the week. Force India will not be present at any point this week as it targets the next test in Barcelona for its debut.
