China and U.S. Both Reject Freedom to Play Online Casinos Defending the right to gamble on the Internet is not about promoting casinos, but about refusing censorship and protecting the freedom of individual choice.
Two nations that govern at supposedly opposite ends of the political spectrum are China, where the individual is unimportant and the state is everything, and the U.S., where we are told freedom rings. In an article published at an Internet technology website, ITProPortal.com, concerning data about online casino sites in 2007, points out that only two major nations currently attempt to block any and all Internet gambling, those being the People's Republic of China and the United States.
Is this the company U.S. politicians wish to keep? When asked what nation is most restrictive of the individual rights of citizens, China is frequently mentioned. Under communist dictatorship, individual desires are subservient to the will of the state, regarding where one lives, what employment one seeks, even whether to have children.
But the image Americans are raised to believe is that of a country that stands for freedom to seek one's own destiny, without government encumbrances. As Barney Frank said, when accused of encouraging online wagering, "There should be far more than behavior encouraged by the government and behavior that is illegal."
Billions in tax revenues available through proper regulation of the online casino industry are lost by enforcing a ban that does not work, and philosophically should not exist. When Hustler publisher Larry Flynt won his landmark case defending the First Amendment, many were put off by the sleaziness of Flynt and his magazine.
But that was precisely the point of defending liberty; if one only defends liberty when used in a way he agrees with, then there is no liberty at all. Defending the right to gamble on the Internet is not about promoting casinos, but about refusing censorship and protecting the freedom of individual choice.
Perhaps there are those who don't think online gambling is a big deal. But some of them wish to smoke, or drink, or eat unhealthy fast foods. There are groups in the U.S. that wish to deny those choices, and force their choices upon the rest. If one doesn't want to end up like the Chinese, now is a good time to write or e-mail your Congressmen, and online gambling is a good place to draw the line.
