A former Afghanistan national football team coach is in hospital after he was stabbed near his home just outside capital Kabul, according to police.

Mohammad Yousef Kargar, 52, played a key role in rebuilding the team after the 2001 fall of the Taliban regime that had banned almost all sports.

He led the team to their greatest success, winning the South Asian Football Federation title in 2013.

The motive for the attack, which happened on Saturday, is unclear.
