Four in 10 Britons have put their partners on a secret diet

A new study has revealed that a shocking four in ten Britons have been put on a diet by their other halves - without even realising it.


The study shows that disgruntled lovers will resort to a number of devious tactics in a bid to slim their sweethearts down.

The most common method was to covertly swap meat with alternatives such as tofu or Quorn, as well as hiding reduced-salt baked beans, low-fat mayo and skimmed milk in full-fat containers.


They would even have sex more often - with the sole aim of getting their partners to exercise. 


But it is men who are the most devious when it comes to secret dieting.


In order to avoid having an awkward conversation 29 percent of men would buy their girlfriends clothes a size too small, openly check out in-shape celebrities, or even pay compliments to their female friends. 


Karen Crowley, brands marketing manager at Magners, who conducted the survey, said: "It's always a difficult subject broaching a partner's weight - and trying to get the other half to be a bit healthier without hurting their feelings can be a minefield.


"It seems that the men are more scared of having the awkward conversation about weight, whereas the girls are more upfront about it."

Here's how to tell if you've been put on a secret diet:


1. They've started using half fat or light mayonnaise instead of the full fat version


2. They suggest you walk somewhere instead of driving or using public transport


3. You've noticed them using more slimming or low fat recipes


4. They offer to cook meals using healthy alternatives


5. Your treats and other favourite foods have started to go walkabout


6. Your baked beans taste slightly different - they could be a reduced-salt brand
