Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas caught Peyton Manning's first touchdown pass after the quarterback returned from neck surgery on Sept. 9, 2012.

The first touchdown of Manning's football journey in Denver came on a cloudless Colorado night, 85 degrees at kickoff, customary 12 percent humidity with a light breeze out of the northeast.

"Hot night," Thomas said. "Hot night, and we waited all day to play. You could just feel the people, the whole stadium -- Peyton Manning's first game with the Broncos. Steelers, Sunday night. I remember everything about that game because we knew all through the offseason, through training camp, everything, Peyton was going to do special things, and that night was kind of when everybody knew it, too."

Thomas caught the first touchdown in Manning's post-surgical NFL career. Overall, it was No. 400 for Manning, authored in a play that has become a signature for the quarterback and the receiver.

It was a short-toss wide receiver screen, built to penalize defenses who blitz Manning and leave Thomas with room to work on the outside.

"Screen play," Thomas said. "We called it 'alley' or 'crease.' One of those. We had run something like it before Peyton came, [QB coach] Adam Gase, [offensive coordinator] Mike McCoy, they knew I had that play in me maybe, so we would run it before, but we run it a lot better since Peyton got here. The play is just Peyton seeing the perfect time, that anticipation, you know, when he knows before he gets the ball there's maybe a touchdown, a big play. Peyton doesn't guess. He sees things, remembers everything, a few moves ahead.

With 5:41 to play in the third quarter, the Broncos ran a two-tight end set with Manning in the shotgun. The Steelers tried to hide the blitz with linebacker Chris Carter lined up across from tight end Jacob Tamme in the slot. But Manning recognized it, as Thomas said, "Because you can't hide that from him, even when you're trying to hide it from him."

Carter was unblocked, but it didn't matter. He didn't get a glove on Manning. The ball was out, already gone to Thomas, who was lined up wide left and facing Manning with his left foot just inside the Broncos' 30-yard line when he caught the pass. Center J.D. Walton, guard Zane Beadles and Tamme got out in front, and Thomas went 71 yards untouched for the score.

Thomas simply dropped the ball after he crossed the goal line, and even that didn't escape Manning's gaze.

"Peyton asked me why I didn't have the ball, so I went back and got the ball," Thomas said with a smile. "I have it now. I'll always have it, but I guess he knew I'd drop it after the touchdown before the play, too."
