Traveling to Mars may seem far-fetched, but NASA is taking a big step in that direction tomorrow morning. The agency's first unmanned test flight of their deep space exploration spacecraft Orion is set to launch at 7:05 AM Eastern Time.
The $370 million mission is NASA's first step to land astronauts on asteroids and, eventually, on Mars.
William Gerstenmaier, NASA’s associate administrator for human exploration and operations, said Orion will travel farther than any spacecraft built for humans has been in more than 40 years.
“That’s a huge milestone for NASA, and for all of us who want to see humans go to deep space,” Gerstenmaier said.
The main goal of the launch is to test Orion's 16.5-foot-wide heat shield, electronic systems and make sure it can withstand high radiation.
