Chelsea got their Premier League campaign back on track with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Hull City at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United last weekend threatened to derail what had been an imperious start to the season but Jose Mourinho’s men regrouped well to seal a win over Steve Bruce’s strugglers with Eden Hazard at his effervescent best.

Just seven minutes had been played when the hosts grabbed the lead. Oscar out on the left delivered a tantalising cross into the box and, when the ball passed over Diego Costa, Hazard was there to head home.

As Chelsea failed to double their lead, Jake Livermore sent a shot a whisker wide of the post, while an already cautioned Gary Cahill provoked ire from the Hull players as he went tumbling despite a lack of contact from either David Meyler or Tom Huddlestone.

The latter then saw red for an ugly challenge of Filipe Luis and the Blues quickly made their advantage count with Costa finishing off an incredible move which saw Hazard dazzle the Hull midfield and defence before playing in his Spanish team-mate, who rolled home with ease to complete the scoring.

Champions Manchester City, though, were able to keep pace and remain just three points behind their title rivals after claiming a slim 1-0 triumph against Leicester City.

The Blues suffered a blow in the warm up with Edin Dzeko forced to pull out and Jose Angel Pozo replacing him in the starting line up and Manuel Pellegrini’s side were slow to start, while Esteban Cambiasso went close with a curled effort for the Foxes.

The Leicester City defence, though, is extremely porous and five minutes before the break Frank Lampard sneaked between their centre-backs and slipped a left-foot shot into the net from Samir Nasri’s ball across the area.

For the second time in a week Southampton boss Ronald Koeman was left frustrated as he watched his side throw away three points, this time to Burnley who sneaked a 1-0 win.

After a quiet opening period, his men had the perfect chance to get in front but when Ryan Bertrand was brought down in the box Tom Heaton saved Dusan Tadic’s strike from 12 yards.

Burnley made sure their visitors paid the penalty for the Serbian’s miss as Nathaniel Clyne’s attempted clearance cannoned into the path of Ashley Barnes and the ex-Brighton man slipped the ball between Fraser Forster and his near post to win the game.

Crystal Palace and Stoke City shared the spoils in their clash at Selhurst Park as they played out a 1-1 draw.

James McArthur put the hosts ahead with a back header from Yannick Bolasie’s centre which looped over Asmir Begovic.

They were in front for only two minutes though as Peter Crouch knocked in an equaliser but neither side were able to claim a winner.

And it was the same scoreline between Sunderland and West Ham at the Stadium of Light.

The Hammers have been in great form but found themselves on the back foot early on when James Tomkins felled Adam Johnson in the penalty area and Jordi Gomez coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

But Stewart Downing, who is currently flourishing under Sam Allardyce, ensured they weren’t to be beaten as his strike, after cutting in from the left, deflected in past the outstretched arm of Costel Pantilimon.

And in the final afternoon fixture, West Bromwich Albion registered an important 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on home soil.

Paul Lambert was left to despair in the first half as his side were reduced to ten men after 22 minutes when Kieran Richardson slid in hard on Stephane Sessegnon after overrunning the ball.

The hosts eventually made the extra man count as Craig Gardner fired in after a melee in the Villans penalty area after 72 minutes.

And despite late pressure, which saw Brad Guzan in the Baggies’ penalty area, Alan Irvine’s men held on to claim the win.
